Dog Bite

There is an old saying — “Every dog is entitled to one bite.”  What that means is that a dog owner cannot be sued for injuries caused by his dog unless the owner knows or should know that the dog is dangerous.  That may mean that we have proof that the dog has bitten someone before.  In one case we had recently, the proof was to be found on the City of Charlottesville website — the picture of the dog owner’s house on the tax assessor’s website clearly showed the sign that said “Beware dangerous dog.”  We settled that case fairly quickly.  Sometimes it is a lot harder to prove that the dog was known to be dangerous.
